Free CMFAS mock exam questions for all 9 papers
Where to find a free CMFAS mock exam for each of the 9 SCI papers: worked sample questions per paper, what SCI gives you, and what is free versus paid.

A free CMFAS mock exam is easiest to find one paper at a time. For each of the 9 papers insurance and financial adviser recruits sit, we publish a free guide of worked sample questions, and every paper page shows one more question from our bank. Full timed mocks and the question bank need a paid pass. SCI itself doesn't publish old exam papers.
Free practice for each paper
Pick the paper you're actually sitting. Each guide below has a handful of questions in the paper's style, with the answer and the reasoning, and each paper page adds a sample question from the bank.
| Paper and its page | Real format | Free worked questions |
|---|---|---|
| RES 5 | 150 MCQs in 3 hours | RES 5 scenario questions |
| M9 | 100 MCQs in 2 hours | M9 premium and law questions |
| M9A | 50 MCQs in 1 hour | M9A ILP questions |
| HI | 50 MCQs in 1 hour 15 minutes | HI questions with the bill sums |
| M8 | 50 MCQs in 1 hour | M8 calculation questions |
| M8A | 50 MCQs in 1 hour | M8A derivatives questions |
| BCP | 40 MCQs in 45 minutes | BCP principles and claims questions |
| PGI | 50 MCQs in 1 hour 15 minutes | PGI motor, travel and home questions |
| ComGI | 50 MCQs in 1 hour 15 minutes | ComGI commercial cover questions |
If you're new to an agency and not sure which papers you need, our papers by role page sorts that out first. Most life insurance recruits start with RES 5.
What's free and what isn't
We'd rather you knew this before you sign up for anything.
Free, no account needed:
- The 9 sample-question guides above, each with worked answers.
- One sample question on each paper page, taken from the bank.
- Our other guides on each paper, from format and pass marks to study plans.
Free with a sign-in: the Quick Guide chapter notes for each paper.
Paid, as a one-time pass: the full question bank, full timed mocks in each paper's real question count and time limit, chapter practice, an explanation on every answer, and "retest your mistakes", which brings back only the questions you got wrong. Our pricing page lists the passes. There's no free tier for the question bank.
What SCI gives you when you register
Once you register and pay for a paper, SCI emails you a confirmation. That email carries the link to the study text eBook and, for papers where SCI provides them, links to eMock exam access and supplementary notes. SCI says the eBook link is switched off once you've sat the paper, and switched back on only if you register for a retake.
The eBook is the text SCI examines you on, so it comes first. Any practice you do, free or paid, sits on top of it.
Try three now
We wrote these three for this guide, one each for RES 5, HI and BCP, so you can check how the free guides feel before you open one.
RES 5: what counts as core CPD?
Under MAS Notice FAA-N26, which of these counts toward a representative's 6 core CPD hours for the year?
- A) A product seminar before a new investment-linked policy launches
- B) An IBF- or SCI-accredited course on ethics or on rules and regulations
- C) Researching products for a client's portfolio review
- D) A sales conference run by your firm
The answer is B. Core hours must come from an accredited ethics or rules and regulations course, or a CPF Board course. Product seminars and conferences can count as CPD training toward the supplementary hours, while research done for clients doesn't count at all, because the notice excludes work that's part of the job. All four options sound like training, which is the trap.
HI: how much of the premium can MediSave pay?
Mdm Ng turns 58 at her next birthday. The private component of her Integrated Shield plan costs $800 this year. How much of that can she pay from MediSave?
- A) All $800
- B) $600
- C) $300
- D) None of it
The answer is B. CPF's Additional Withdrawal Limit for ages 41 to 70 is $600 a year, so she pays the other $200 in cash. C is the limit for 40 and below, and D confuses the private component with a rider, which MediSave can't pay for at all. Our guide to MediShield Life vs Integrated Shield plans has the full table.
BCP: which principle caps the claim?
A homeowner insures her flat for more than it's worth. A fire causes a loss that costs S$40,000 to put right. Which principle stops the insurer from paying her more than that?
- A) Utmost good faith
- B) Indemnity
- C) Proximate cause
- D) Insurable interest
The answer is B. Indemnity puts the insured back in the financial position she was in just before the loss, and no better, so over-insuring doesn't raise the payout. The other three are real principles from the same BCP chapter, which is why they make good wrong answers. Our BCP sample questions have more in this style.
Free reading the RES 5 paper is built on
RES 5 tests MAS's notices and guidelines, and MAS publishes them free on its website. When a practice question turns on a rule, read the paragraph itself. FAA-N16 on recommendations, for example, sets out the selected client test and the knowledge checks for specified investment products in a few pages. Reading the source once does more for the next ten questions on it than another round of notes.
Why you won't find real past exams
SCI doesn't release its papers, and its exam rules forbid candidates from copying, photographing or disclosing any part of an exam. A free file that claims to hold "the real questions" is either invented by whoever posted it or exists because someone broke those rules.
There's a practical problem too. SCI updates its study texts, and each eBook carries a version control record at the back listing the changes. Questions written against an older edition can have answers that are now wrong, and you won't know which ones. Our note on where the study text is out of date shows how often that happens.
How to use free questions well
A handful of questions won't tell you whether you'll pass. What they can tell you is whether you understand the style before you spend money or book a date.
- Read the chapters the questions come from first. Answering cold mostly measures what you happened to know already.
- Answer each question before you read the explanation, and write your reason down.
- For every miss, find the line in the study text that settles it.
- If most of a guide feels easy, you're ready for timed practice. If most of it doesn't, go back to the text.
Then the real test is timed work. RES 5 needs 75% on Part I and 80% on Part II in the same sitting, and the other eight papers need 70%. Only full mocks in the real question count and time limit show you whether you clear those bars with time to spare.
When to move from free to timed practice
Move on once the free questions stop surprising you. That's the point where you need volume and a clock. With a pass, after each full mock your results list up to three chapters where you scored below the pass mark, which tells you where to spend the next evening.
Start with the paper you're booking next. If that's RES 5, try the free RES 5 sample questions tonight, and when they feel routine, start RES 5 as a single paper for full timed mocks.
