ComGI practice papers: how to choose before you pay
ComGI practice papers worth using match the 50-question, 75-minute format, cover all ten lines on SCI's list and explain every answer. Five checks first.

ComGI practice papers earn their place if they copy the real paper: 50 multiple-choice questions in 1 hour 15 minutes, 35 right to pass. They should also show their working and cover every class of business cover on SCI's list. ComGI is the widest of the three general insurance papers, so coverage matters more here than anywhere else in the set.
The problem with wide papers
SCI's ComGI contents list has 10 lines: property, business interruption, liability and contingency in two parts, commercial motor, marine and aviation, construction, machinery and bond, pecuniary, foreign worker, and group personal accident with corporate travel. A practice set that skips two of those still feels like a full set, because the other eight look normal. You find the gap when the real paper arrives.
So the first test of any ComGI material is simple: ask which of the 10 it covers, and how many questions each gets.
What SCI gives you, and what it doesn't
SCI sends the ComGI eBook link by email once you've registered and paid. On SCI's page for these papers the eBook is the only study material named, and no question bank is listed. Sit the exam and the link is cut off straight away; it returns for a resit only after you register and pay again. Take notes while you still have access.
What's out there
| Source | Useful for | Risk |
|---|---|---|
| Shared PDFs and screenshots | Seeing question wording | Gaps in coverage and no dates |
| Fixed paid sets | One timed run | Questions repeat on your second try |
| Interactive banks | Topic drills, retesting mistakes | Explanations differ in quality |
| Notes from the eBook | Learning terms and exclusions | No timer |
Business insurance suits layered learning. Read a class, answer questions on that class, then mix classes in a timed paper.
Five checks before you pay
- Format: a ComGI paper has 50 questions and 75 minutes. A shorter list belongs to BCP.
- Coverage: ask which of SCI's ten contents lines the set includes, and whether liability and contingency gets both parts.
- Edition: the ComGI study text is the 8th Edition. Hold any set up against the Version Control Record in your eBook. Our questions get the same treatment, and where an answer and the eBook disagree, the eBook wins.
- Explanations: read three. A good one names the clause, exclusion or party that decides the case.
- Volume: three full mock exams use 150 questions before one repeats, and topic drills need extra.
Which classes to drill first
Marine and aviation, construction and machinery, and pecuniary insurance are classes you're unlikely to have met in daily life. If you've sold motor or worked on property claims, you start ahead on those. For everyone else, the unfamiliar classes are where practice pays off first. Commercial motor is the exception: it looks like the personal cover you know and differs in who is insured and what's covered.
SCI doesn't publish how the 50 questions divide among the ten lines. Spread your early practice evenly, then lean on whichever class scores lowest. A short block on each class, followed by a mixed mock, shows you quickly where you're weak.
SCI also says BCP is the foundation that ComGI builds on, and it asks candidates to take BCP first. Terms such as indemnity and subrogation come up in commercial cases, so if you skipped the order, revise BCP's principles alongside. Our general insurance certification guide sets out the order.
Practise like an underwriter reads a risk
Commercial questions tend to describe a business, a loss and a policy, then ask who pays or what applies. Slow down on the first read and sort the facts into three piles: who is insured, what was lost, and which part of the policy responds. Most wrong answers come from skipping the third pile and answering from instinct.
Build a one-page sheet per class as you go. Put the purpose of the cover at the top, then what it includes, what it leaves out, and the terms SCI's eBook uses for each. Ten classes give you ten pages, which is a short enough stack to reread the night before. Update a page each time a mock exposes a gap.
Use timed mocks to practise the sort. At 90 seconds a question, you can afford one calm read and one check, not a third. If you find yourself rereading, mark the class and come back to it in topic practice, because the clock is the wrong place to learn it.
Where CMFAS Prep fits
The ComGI practice page holds 200+ ComGI questions. Here's what you do with them:
- Sit timed mocks in Simulation Mode, laid out as 50 questions in 75 minutes.
- Work one class of cover at a time in chapter practice.
- Read the explanation under every answer, including the ones you got right by luck.
- Go back to only the questions you missed, in sets of 30, until they stop costing you marks.
- See chapter scores after each mock, plus up to three chapters flagged when you're under the pass mark.
One month of ComGI access on a One Paper pass is S$29.90. The ComGI study plan runs three weeks, which fits inside it. There are no video lessons, tutors or exam booking here; you book through SCI.
The Pass Guarantee comes with conditions. You finish two full Simulation Mode mocks, you fail the real exam, and you claim within 30 days of the result, and then your access is extended by one month at no charge. Every other purchase is final, which is why we suggest reading the terms first.
When your scores say book
A run of timed mocks above 35 out of 50 is the signal, and one good result isn't. Check the chapter scores as well, since a pass on the whole paper can hide a class you scored badly on. SCI sets a single pass mark across all ten lines, so a weak class costs marks you must win back elsewhere. To warm up before a full mock, try our ComGI sample questions.
