Book the PGI exam without paying twice: SCI's rules

To book the PGI exam, log in to the SCI website, choose PGI from the general insurance papers and pay by Visa or MasterCard. After you submit there's no cancellation, no refund and no substitute candidate. A weekday daytime sitting is S$109.00 and an evening or weekend sitting is S$119.90, GST included, so choose your session before you pay.

What you're booking

PGI is 50 multiple-choice questions, and you pass with 70 percent, which is 35 right and room for 15 misses. SCI lists seven topics: private motor car insurance including private motorcycles, personal property, personal accident, travel, personal liability, critical illness and hospital cash health cover, and foreign domestic worker and golfer's insurance. It's the paper for anyone advising on or selling personal general insurance, so it suits agents whose clients buy cover for themselves.

What the fee includes

SCI's PGI fee has a non-refundable registration fee of S$10.90 built in, as does ComGI's. BCP's doesn't. Members and non-members pay the same, because SCI's member rate applies to certain CMFAS papers and not the general insurance ones.

SessionFee
Weekday, 9am to 5pm bandS$109.00
After 5pmS$119.90
Weekend, 9am to 5pmS$119.90, where SCI offers one

A retake costs the same as a first attempt, and there's no limit on how many times you can sit. SCI doesn't grant exemptions from the general insurance papers, and sends exemption enquiries to MAS Notice 211.

What you can't undo

SCI says it won't allow cancellation or withdrawal, won't refund fees and won't swap in another candidate. So the money is committed at the payment page, and the only flexibility left is the date.

Moving your date is possible, with a clock on it. SCI counts working days, leaves out weekends and public holidays, and doesn't count the exam day.

  • Seven or more working days ahead: your first change is free, and each later one costs S$32.70.
  • Between 3 and 6 working days ahead: S$32.70 per request.
  • Two working days ahead or less: no change at all.

At S$32.70, a second change eats 30 percent of the daytime fee. If you move from a daytime to an evening slot you also pay a top-up fee, and moving from evening to daytime refunds nothing.

Mismatched details are the other trap. Name, date of birth or ID number have to be corrected in person at SCI, with original documents, before the exam. SCI won't alter them at admission, and if the request arrives after the paper has started you can't sit.

Booking step by step

  1. Log in to your SCI account, or create one if PGI is your first SCI exam. SCI only takes registrations online.
  2. Open the Certification in General Insurance page and select PGI. Check it isn't BCP or ComGI, which sit beside it.
  3. Choose a session from SCI's schedule.
  4. Pay by credit card. For an individual registering online it's the only option SCI offers.
  5. Watch your inbox for the Confirmation of Examination Registration, then the eBook link.

Both emails go to the address on your registration form. Check spam if they don't turn up, and correct your details in your SCI account if you gave the wrong address.

Choosing a session

SCI's schedule on 2 November 2026 listed PGI sessions to 31 December, on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays only, with none at the weekend. The earliest listed was 10 November. Every sitting is 1 hour 15 minutes long and starts at 9:00 am or 7:45 pm.

The morning start falls in the cheaper band. The evening start costs S$10.90 more. Evening candidates finish at 9:00 pm, so allow for the trip home and a night's sleep before work. SCI changes its schedule, so read the live one when you book.

PGI follows BCP in SCI's order, and SCI asks candidates to take BCP first. If you need both, book BCP first and leave a gap. If you're studying for both papers at once, pick a PGI date that gives you time for the policy exclusions after BCP's principles have settled. Our BCP booking guide has that paper's rules.

A timeline that avoids change fees

Count backwards from the exam in working days, because that's how SCI counts.

Working days before the examWhat to have done
15A first timed mock, so you know where you stand
10Weak topics reread, and a second mock sat
8A decision: keep the date or move it
7Last day your first change is free
3 to 6A change costs S$32.70
2 or fewerThe date is locked

The decision at eight working days is the one that matters. If two mocks in a row land near the pass mark of 35 out of 50, move the date now and use your free change. Waiting until day six turns the same decision into a payment.

After you pay

The eBook link comes with your confirmation, and SCI switches it off once you've sat the exam. So read before you sit. SCI recommends at least 40 to 50 hours of study per general insurance module, and says it depends on your experience. Someone who handles motor claims already knows many of the exclusions that a career switcher is meeting for the first time.

Use the weeks to work through the PGI study plan and then compare your options in PGI practice paper options. When you're ready to practise, the PGI practice page explains the timed mocks, and you can start PGI as a single paper.

On the day

The paper is closed book on a computer screen, at SCI, 9 Temasek Boulevard, unit 14-01 of Suntec Tower Two. SCI provides no calculators or stationery. The exam day guide lists what to bring. Results are shown as soon as you finish, and SCI gives you a result slip and no certificate. A pass earns 1.25 CPD hours.
