Booking the HI exam with SCI: accounts, fees and slots

You register for the Health Insurance (HI) exam through the Singapore College of Insurance (SCI), the body that runs CMFAS module exams in Singapore. Create a candidate account on the SCI site, pick the HI paper under the English medium exam list, choose a date, and pay by card. The whole booking takes about ten minutes once your account exists.

The harder part is timing. HI tests your recall of specific dollar figures, so the date you pick decides how many days you have to drill those numbers before you sit the paper. Book at least three weeks out and you give yourself room to study without rushing.

What the HI exam costs and what you get

HI is one of the cheaper CMFAS papers. A non-member pays $76.30 for a weekday daytime slot and $82.84 for an evening or weekend slot. Compare that to M9 and M9A, which run closer to $130 each, and HI looks like a bargain. The catch is that a fail still costs you the full fee again plus a delay to your representative licence, so the low price is no reason to walk in underprepared.

Payment is by Visa or MasterCard only. There is no invoice option and no cash at the door. After your card clears, SCI emails you a link to the study materials. Hard copy books are no longer posted out, so the eBook link in that email is the version you study from. Check your inbox the moment payment goes through and save the link somewhere you will find it again.

Step by step on the SCI site

Go to the SCI website and open the candidate login. If this is your first CMFAS paper, register a new account first. Use a personal email address rather than an agency one. People switch firms, and you want your exam history and certificates tied to an inbox you keep.

Once you are logged in, open the exam registration section. Pick the English medium examination, sometimes labelled CSE, then find Health Insurance (HI) in the module list. Confirm you have selected HI and not a neighbouring code before you go to payment, because the modules sit close together in the dropdown and a wrong pick means cancelling and rebooking.

At the slot stage you choose the session. Here is how the two options compare.

A weekday morning slot is the better pick for most candidates. HI leans on memory more than reasoning, and you recall numbers more reliably early in the day than after a full shift at work. The few dollars you save on the daytime fee are a side benefit.

What to do the day you book

Booking confirms your seat. It also sets your study deadline, so treat the confirmation email as the start of a countdown rather than the end of a task.

HI has 50 multiple choice questions and a pass mark of 70 percent. That means you can miss no more than 15 questions. A chunk of the paper turns on figures you simply have to know cold, including the April 2025 MediShield Life limits. Two numbers come up again and again: the $1,630 daily ward and treatment limit and the $200,000 policy year limit. If you blur these with older figures or with private Integrated Shield numbers, you lose marks you could have banked.

The classic mistake is leaving everything to the final week. HI covers several schemes that look alike on the surface, and cramming them together is how candidates end up swapping one scheme's claim limit for another's under time pressure. Spread the work across the three weeks instead. Spend early sessions getting the schemes straight, then use the back half to test recall under timed conditions.

Exam day logistics

A calculator is mandatory for HI. SCI does not lend them out, so bring your own. The paper includes hospital bill questions where you work out a payable amount, and you cannot do those reliably in your head. A standard financial calculator such as the Casio FC-100V is fine. Check the batteries the night before.

Bring physical photo ID. Your NRIC works, and an Employment Pass works if you hold one. A photo of your ID on your phone is not accepted.

Plan to arrive 30 minutes early. Test centres run check-in and seat allocation before the paper starts, and a late arrival can cost you your slot with no refund. Build in time for traffic.
